Hello,
While working on xfce-utils, to let xfterm4 use our xvt script I stumbled upon all the quirks that terminals have. Just trying to pass through an -e (execute) option and -T (title) option to the terminal causes breakage. For example gnome-terminal gives a segfault when you call it with -T. It only accepts a -t or --title.
Simply said, it's a mess of uninteroperability and no standards.
I see 2 options:
1)
Let the xvt script translate some options.
No idea how hard this is. I think it needs a serious shell scripter, which I'm not. And I might just be the only one who is fed up with this.
2)
Patch terminals to at least take -e and -T
Most terminals take these options already. But gnome-terminal needs to be patched for example. Not sure if all the maintainers (upstream and here) will like it though.
Send patches upstream so there is at least some standardisation in terminal land.
3)
Leave everything as it is, which imo isn't good.
There will be installs where calling xvt will just break without a real error.
