Tim and Adam,

This is NOT a flame war nor do I wish to make light of anyones work and
efforts. I am sure that Frederic Crozat put a lot of work into this project.
This is just to point out a PUBLIC fact.

You guys need to chill out.

The (generic) Firefox 1.5 from Mozilla works very well in Mandriva 2006 and in
current Cooker. But the Mozilla release is a tar.gz and not a Mandriva.rpm
which requires a little more, but not much more, than a 'mouse click on the
filename in the GUI' to install. Fedora Core 4 (the old release) has a Firefox
1.5 that installs and works. Fedora Core 5-test (the cooker of Fedora Core)
has a Firefox 1.5 that installs and works. And BOTH of these Fedora Core rpms
install and work in Mandriva 2006 and Mandriva cooker. No hacks. No slashes.
No 'Mandrake the Magician' magic. Just install and use.

It has already been announced that there will never be a Firefox 1.5 for any
of the 'old Mandrivas' like there is for the 'old Fedora Core 4'. It took 2
months after Mozilla released the Firefox 1.5 for (generic)linux, Windows, and
Mac for the Firefox 1.5 Mandriva to appear in Cooker. Approximately seven
weeks after Fedora Core. And Mandriva Firefox 1.5 is still not installable or
usable because of dependencies.

Oh. And by the way. There is a Thunderbird RC-1 for both Fedora Core 4 and
Fedora Core 5-test.

Think about it. Firefox 1.5 for Windows, Mac and any other linux for two
months. Why would he ask - When Firefox 1.5 for Mandriva?

I think that the interesting question is that to avoid repetition of similar libraries, there is a pyramidal structure where one lib is used by many programs...

That is fine, but if you want to install only Galeon or for my example Avidemux you MUST install firefox (and the good version...). So you must have 2 browsers even if you want to use only one... Or you must recompile the original sources that is not a very user-friendly way to say to windows users to choose Mandriva..

Isn't it possible to separate things?

For example avidemux needs in fact Spidermonkey javascript engine from mozilla, which is find in Firefox packages.... Isn't it possible to make a real library based install ? Separate generic libs from mandriva package to enable more compatibility ?

I think it is a serious question and not only a flame one...
It means also to my point of vue that if the actual system is maintained, all the dependant packages must be proposed at the same time... to avoid confusion.... Even if some packages are not in 'main' but perhaps in 'contrib' or 'plf'....

There is a big deal for Linux with this sort of problem, as it is specific to Linux.

I remember some discussions here when FF 1.5 was just out, and some people said that it was not a priority to integrate it in cooker...
I don't agree with it... It's sure that it is not a Mandriva product but if Mandriva wants to be seriously considered it must be reactive... FF is not a confidential product used by only 3 people in the world... It is the second alternative browser behind IE.....

To finish what means:

" 44/131: mozilla-firefox #############################################

And effectively Bookmarks, and other things mentionned precedently doesn't work as well...
