I installed ivman (ivman-0.6.8-2mdk in Contrib) and added it chkconfig and
I do not have this problem. 

The advice to this effect was given, IIRC, by arvidjaar (thank you!). The
files on the stick are owned by myself (not root) and writable by myself. I
use it under GNOME, I haven't tried it under KDE.
