Oops, forgot to mention. I can get proper clock/keyboard behavior every time
by adding the kernel parameter "clock=tsc" in the append line of lilo.conf.

description:
AMD K6-2 450 with SiS 530 Chipset. Did a truly minimal install of 2006 with
only xdm and IceWM, setup remote sources to the /devel tree, ran urpmi
--auto-select and manually installed latest kernel. At that point, everything
was working fine.

Later installed a package (grip) which required hal and after rebooting, I
couldn't log into xdm because it's almost impossible to type a single
character. For example trying to type "rick" in the Login field results in
something like "rrriiiicccckkkkkk" no matter how quickly I tap the keys.

Steps to reproduce: Install hal.
After uninstalling hal, the problem goes away. More info:

uname -r
2.6.12-17mdk-i586-up-1GB

rpm -q hal
hal-0.4.8-15.1.20060mdk

dmesg | grep input
input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard on isa0060/serio0
input: ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse on isa0060/serio1

lspci | grep ISA
00:01.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] \
SiS85C503/5513 (LPC Bridge) (rev b3)

This is a test-box so I'm willing to experiment.
