Hi, > > end sep'07: make final when install/upgrade bugs are fixed. > > Likely we are coming back to a 6 months release cycle (4 months if I > manage to convince everybody, but unlikely). I know it is difficult to foreseen the future espcially in free software environnement but that are the main objective in erm of software and idea for both 2007.1 and 200.8? I mean, we have now in 2007.0 : - a pretty new kernel - a new X windows - up to date gnome and kde and all - fancy 3d deskstop - and probably all kind of thing I forgot So that are the objective of 2007.1 and 2008.0. From my point of view, I 'll say : * for 2007.1 (in about 6 months): Base : - update kernel up to like 2.6.18 than freeze - update all server (apache, mysql, ...) to their last stable realease if the realease appear whithin 2 months, freeze except bugs, security, ... Productivity (or so) - up to date gnome and kde minus one month - up to date OpenOffice minus one month - up to date fancy stuff (to be listed) Work in progress : - finish rpmdrake - integrate all errats and security works - finalize the build process and control process * for 2008.0 (in about a year) Base : - update kernel up to 2007.1 one or, if necessary to the last one after 2007.1 - update all server (apache, mysql, ...) to their lastest realease if the realease appear whithin 2 months, freeze except bugs, security, ... Productivity (or so) - integrate kde 4.0 if possible - update the other projects to their last realease - up to date fancy stuff (to be listed) Work in progress : - integrate the drak soft - integrate all errats and security works These are just examples, the idea is to make 2007.0 - > cooker -> 2007.1 with a limited objective in both terms of new products integration and new software integration and use contrib as a sandbox for future 2008.0. In other words, the breakages or big upgrade, like the Xorg6.9 ->7.0 upgrade, shall be reported after the realease of 2007.1 because : - it happends for 2006.0 -> 2007.0 transition like that anyway (xorg have been integrated quite recently in the time frame, the same for drak3d); - it will show a perspective for the users (I use now a 2007.0, then in six months , I 'll get just a set of update and thus not problem); - it will be easier (i think) to stabilise and thus reduce the pressure on the packagers. Besides, having a quite stable basis during 6 months, will increase the quality of the dev. done on the tools provided by MDV and contributors because the delta between 2007.0 and 2007.1 will make dev. on 2007.0 work without much change (reduce backport). To speak about the future, here is the list of the tools, ideas, ... I would like to have integrated in 2008 : * for business : - a really fast PDF reader - a default PDF printer installed for both gnome and KDE - an equivalent to ACROBAT to manipulate the PDF files (did I insist on PDF ;) ) * for users : - a more clear and integrated mcc especially on the network aspect. - an easier way to create shares with other users (in windows network) - propose both a more radical look and feel on gnome and KDE and a classic one. * for technical matters - unify the sound system using alsa or aoss or arts or ... , this is one of the last PITA on linux - provide an easy and working firewall ( easy easy, stupidly easy) with integration with other services (for example open a SMB serrver on private network, open the firewall ports only on the private network) - provide a drakpme (pme=french definition of small compagny) that allow to install and configure a small network with the following capacities : - samba shares - backup - user management - printer shares - fax server - VPN server - firewall -virii scan and provide an easy way for people to install win computers around (install this stuff, configure that, ....) . All that based on scenario for ease on installation. I am even thinking that the supply of computers with this kind of drakpme can be sold as a bundle without problem asI know lots of PME that are looking for this kind of "services + material" bundles. Sorry for this long mail. Laurent
