It seems that nvidia's glx and the new xorg server are incompatible.
I get these messages in Xorg.0.log:
LoadModule: "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so" (glx)
LoadModule: given non-canonical module name
"/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so"
Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 7.1.99.903, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.3
AIGLX enabled
Loading extension GLX

NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If

But xdpyinfo shows GLX as a loaded extension:

Attempting to run glxgears causes X to terminate.
