Tout d'abord, je vais vous dire que c'est avec pas mal de nostalgie que
j'ai installé cette Mandriva 2008. En effet, Mandrake était la
distritbution Linux de mes premiers pas, celle qui m'a appris les bases
et qui m'en a, du coup, fait bien baver.

Après avoir lu l'interview d'Anne Nicolas et le test relativement bon de
cette version, je me suis laissé tenter par son téléchargement. Et bien
cela fait longtemps que je n'avais pas mis les pieds chez Mandriva :
leur site a vraiment beaucoup évolué et télécharger la distribution est
presque devenu un jeu d'enfant. Je n'ai rencontré aucun problème lors du
téléchargement, ni lors de l'installation. Ce fut  un vrai plaisir de
retrouver l'installeur de Mandriva, il n'a pas pris une ride tout en
ayant su garder un aspect moderne et fonctionnel. Il est d'ailleurs
encore plus intuitif que lors de l'intégration de cette nouvelle version
dans Mandrake 9.1 ou 9.2.

KDE est l'environnement de Mandriva par défaut. À vrai dire, je n'ai pas
beaucoup cherché, je me sus immédiatement connecté sur notre bon vieux
GNOME. Et le résultat n'a pas était désagréable. Seules le jeu d'icônes
m'a déplu. J'ai remis Mist et le tour est jouer, une Mandriva toute
jolie. Le reste est somme toute classique. Un GNOME, un joli thème, rien
de bien exceptionnel. De plus, Mandriva est en retard par rapport à
Fedora sur les versions des logiciels, mais ceci étant normal, on ne
peut pas lui en vouloir. Mandriva fait du Linux pour grand débutant et
elle le fait très bien d'après moi.

J'ai essayé d'installer diverses applications et les choses se sont un
peu gâtées. J'ai voulu installer les pilotes nVidia, mais un bug relatif
au gestionnaire de paquet m'en a empêché. Sans l'aide des membres du
salon IRC #mandrivafr, j'y serai encore. J'ai donc enfin pu installer
les pilotes en utilisant l'assistant de configuration automatique de
Mandriva. Pas le moindre pépin, tout s'est passé sans encombre.

La reconnaissance matérielle est quant à elle vraiment excellente.
Mandriva 2008 a fait un bon dans mon coeur comme vous ne pouvez
l'imaginer. Ma Logitech MX1000 fonctionne à merveille, les boutons sur
le coté fonctionnent parfaitement sous Firefox pour aller et venir sur
les pages précédentes et suivantes. Ce n'est pas le cas partout, et
notamment sur Fedora. Je vais poster une RFE dans ce sens sur x.org chez
Fedora, si Mandriva sait le faire, pourquoi pas nous ?

The hardware is in really excellent. Mandriva 2008 has done a good in my
heart as you can imagine. My Logitech MX1000 works quite nicely, the
buttons on the side work perfectly in Firefox to come and go on pages
backwards and forwards. That is not the case everywhere, including
Fedora. I will post an RFE to that end at x.org among Fedora, if
Mandriva knows do it, why not us?

As someone running Fedora on my laptop (out of necessity), this is good
to hear.
