Anyways, the wiki page has several references and sources on the topic:

The most reliable source would be from the patent owner Unisys itself:

Also worth noticing is that Fedora builds gimp with lzw compression (which is 
the default in gimp's configure scripts), so I'd say that it should be quite 
okay for us to do the same. :)
